Abstract Borated glycerol hydroxyesters and borated thioglycerol hydroxyesters are effective friction reducing additives when incorporated into lubricating compositions. The borated glycerol hydroxyesters and borated thioglycerol hydroxyesters are produced by borating a glycerol hydroxyester or thioglycerol hydroxyester of the formula Image or Image wherein each X is S or O, and R is a hydrocarbyl group of from 8 to 24 carbon atoms.
