ABSTRACT A high carbonate content borated product is obtained by mixing an overbased sulfonate and any required inert liquid medium, borating the mixture at a temperature less than that at which substantial foaming occurs, raising the temperature of the borated mixture to a temperature in excess of the boiling point of water within the mixture and separating the water from the reaction mixture while retaining the carbonate in the mixture. The product is a very fine size organic source of boron which may be easily dispersed in a lubricating oil or grease for its anti- oxidant, anti-rust and frictional characteristics and for its extreme pressure qualities.
