This invention relates to an clay-based animal litter to which has been applied a liquid carrier containing a boron containing compound in an odor-controlling effective amount. The boron-containing compound acts by antimicrobial action, controlling unease, or a combination of these mechanisms when the litter is used by the animal. A preferred embodiment of the invention provides a litter to which is added a mixture of boric acid and borax~via an aqueous dispersion, with an alkali metal hydroxide as the dispersing agent.
