Prepare boron carbide-aluminum structural composites by infiltrating molten aluminum or aluminum alloy into a porous preform that is either unbaked or baked at a temperature of up to 1800 ~C to form a densified cermet and then heat treat the cermet in air or an oxygen-containing atmosphere to form a dense outer surface layer of aluminum oxide. The resulting structural cermets can withstand prolonged exposure to temperatures above the melting point of aluminum without suffering undue degradation of physical properties such as flexure strength.

On peut préparer des matériaux composites structurels en carbure de bore-aluminium en infiltrant de l'aluminium ou un alliage d'aluminium fondu dans une ébauche poreuse non cuite ou cuite à une température pouvant atteindre 1800 ~C pour former un cermet densifié que l'on traite ensuite à chaud dans l'air ou dans une atmosphère contenant de l'oxygène pour former une couche de surface externe dense en oxyde d'aluminium. Les cermets structurels résultants peuvent résister à une exposition prolongée à des températures dépassant celle du point de fusion de l'aluminium sans subir de dégradation marquée de leurs caractéristiques physiques telles que la résistance à la flexion.
