Anchor assemblies (10) are provided to secure one or more implants (60) along the spinal column that include a retainer (40) in a receiver member (20). The retainer (40) is configured to distribute the forces exerted on the retainer (40) toward the proximal end of the retainer (40) where it may deform without deforming, distorting or altering the retainer (40) where it supports the anchor member (12) in the receiver member (20). The desired positioning of the anchor member (12) relative to the retainer (40) and receiver member (20) can thus be attained even when the retainer (40) is subject to deformation forces.
