The mutant may further have a deletion in the thymidine kinase gene and/or the glycoprotein gI-gene; or have an insertion of a heterologous gene. Rec- ombinant nucleic acid which comprises the gE-gene or a part thereof. Glycoprotein gE, peptides based thereon and complexes of the glycoproteins gE and gI, and antibodies against them. Vaccines and diagnostic kits comprising any one of these materials.
