A box-type or shelf-type piece of furniture is equipped with a supporting structure which consists of a floor profile, a ceiling profile and three vertically arranged connecting supports. This supporting structure can be covered by side parts, door elements and ceiling plates and can accommodate trays on the inside. The covering elements are fastened by elements and swivel mountings which are connected with the supports. A series of pieces of furniture can be constructed with the same basic elements while using many different materials for the encasement as well as various horizontal projections.
