-24- ABSTRACT A lead for implantation in a patient's body, for conducting a countershock from a source of elec- trical energy, is disclosed. The lead comprises an elongate tubular insulating member, a terminal at a proximal end of the member, and an exposed cylindri- cal, electrically conductive, braid electrode sur- rounding a portion of the lead, spaced from the termi- nal. An insulated electrical conductor interconnects the terminal and the braid electrode. Preferably, the insulated electrical conductor comprises an extension of the braid electrode, which extension is surrounded by a tubular insulating sheath. When used as a bi- polar endocardial catheter, a tip electrode is pro- vided at a distal end of the lead, and a second ter- minal is provided at a proximal end thereof. A second conductor is provided to interconnect the tip elec- trode and the second terminal. In a tripolar form, a ring electrode is disposed between the braid electrode and the tip electrode, and a third terminal is pro- vided at the proximal end of the lead. A third con- ductor interconnects the third terminal and the ring electrode.
