The present invention provides an improved braided polyester suture made from polyester filaments having a weight average molecular weight of greater than 35,000, a tenacity of from about 7 to about 8.5 grams /denier, a percent elongation to break of less than 30 percent and a boiling point water shrinkage of from about 0.5 to 3.0 percent. The inventive suture has reduced roughness and improved tensile strength.
