A braided tubular article (10) comprises a tubular form of helically braided yarns (12) to which is coupled a plurality of spaced axially extending restraining elements (14), conveniently as warp elements braided with the tubular form. The yarns (12) are braided with a small helix pitch that permits the tubular form to be extended axially and contract radially onto a substrate as a protective sleeve. The warp elements are essentially inextensible and frictional coupling between them and the braid yarns inhibits extension of the article, permitting it to be handled and passed over a substrate before applying a deliberate extension force to overcome the friction and contract it into the substrate. The restraining elements may be other than branded warp elements and the extension-inhibiting coupling may be a disruptable bond instead of, or supplementing, friction. Frictionally acting warp elements permit the extended article to assume a bent form in one or more directions. The warp elements may be positionally floating or anchored with respect to the braid yarns.

L'invention concerne un article tubulaire tressé (10) (Fig. 1) comprenant une forme tubulaire de fils tressés (12) en hélice, à laquelle est couplée une pluralité d'éléments (14) de retenue espacés s'étendant axialement, de préférence des éléments de chaîne tressés avec la forme tubulaire. Les fils (12) sont tressés avec un petit pas d'hélice, ce qui permet à la forme tubulaire de s'étendre axialement et de se contracter radialement sur un substrat en guise de gaine protectrice. Les éléments de chaîne sont essentiellement inextensibles et le couplage à friction entre ceux-ci et les fils de chaîne empêchent l'article de s'étendre, ce qui permet de le manipuler et de le passer sur un substrat avant l'application d'une force d'extension délibérée supérieure aux frottements et donc susceptible de le contracter à l'intérieur du substrat. Les éléments de retenue peuvent être d'autres éléments que des éléments de chaîne et le couplage anti-extension peut être une liaison cassable à la place et en complément d'une liaison à friction. Les éléments de chaîne à action par frottements permettent d'imprimer à l'article allongé forme courbée dans une ou plusieurs directions. Les éléments de chaîne peuvent être flottants ou fixés par rapport aux fils tressés.
