An articulated rail road car has a number of rail car units supported by rail road trucks for rolling operation in a longitudinal direction. The car has a pneumatic service brake system operable to actuate brakes on all of the trucks, and a handbrake system operable to actuate brakes on at least half of the trucks. The handbrake system can be either a hydraulic system, or a mechanical lever system for transmitting force and motion from the hand brake actuator to the brakes. The hydraulic system includes flexible members to span the gaps at the articulated connectors between rail car units. The mechanical lever system includes sheathed cables mounted between adjacent car bodies to spanning the gaps at the articulations. The hand brake actuator can actuate three or more brakes from a single position.
