ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A brake assembly having a master cylinder attached to the front shell of a power assist apparatus. The front shell is connected to a rear shell which in turn is fixed to a stationary member. The front shell has a conical section that extends toward and partially surrounds the master cylinder A movable wall located between the front and rear shell, which is substantially concentric to the front shell, divides the interior thereof into a front chamber and a rear chamber. The movable wall is connected to operational pistons within the master cylinder. An annular projection extends through an opening in the rear shell. A cylindrical member located in the opening extends into the rear chamber. A return spring urges the movable wall into engagement with the movable wall. The position of the cylindrical member is adjustable to align the pistons in the master cylinder and thereby permit fluid communication from a reservoir to the master cylinder through compensator ports. A bearing member which surrounds the annular projection has a resilient portion that engages the annular portion to seal the chamber from the surrounding environment. In response to an input signal, a pressure differential is created across the movable wall. This pressure differential produces an output force which moves the pistons past the compensator ports to develop an operational fluid pressure for effecting a brake application. The conical section of the first shell reacts to reduce any axial deflection that may be created by the output force.
