A brake backing plate having first and second opposing surfaces at least said first surface being substantially planar. A plurality of throughbores defined through said first and second surfaces. A plurality of cavities defined through said first surface around said throughbores wherein said cavities provide an increased surface area for plugs of a friction pad material to resist sheer forces acting on the friction assembly.
