ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A relatively simple brake device for use on a playground merry-go-round includes a brake drum mounted at the centre of the bottom of the circular base of the merry-go- round, a brake shoe for bearing against the drum to slow or stop the merry-go-round, a pair of arms pivotally mounted on the bottom of the base near the outer edge thereof, a linkage between the outer ends of the arms and the brake shoe for pushing the latter against the brake drum, helical springs for biasing the arms to a rest position in which the linkage does not press against the brake shoe, and weights on the inner ends of the arms, whereby when the base of the merry-go-round rotates at a speed above a predetermined safe limit, because of centrifugal force, the weights move outwardly against the bias of the springs to rotate the arms and push the brake shoe against the drum to slow the merry-go-round.
