ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A brake mechanism mounted on an axle has components normally engaged to rotate as a unit with the axle. The brake mechanism has particular utility in combination with a drum hoist or winch to which it is operatively inter- connected whereby the hoist or winch is positively braked to slow down and stop when rotary speed of the axle exceeds a predetermined maximum speed.
