A novel system is provided for monitoring brake wear and stroke length. The system includes a brake chamber, a rotatable camshaft, a lever, a sensor, and an electronic control module (ECM). To determine brake wear, the sensor provides information to the ECM regarding a static position of the camshaft after a brake application relative to a starting static position of the camshaft prior to a brake application. The ECM determines an angle of rotation of the camshaft and compares it with a predetermined angle of rotation of the camshaft. If the angle of rotation is greater than or equal to the predetermined angle of rotation, the ECM transmits an appropriate signal. To determine stroke length, the sensor provides information to the ECM regarding the maximum dynamic position of the camshaft during a brake application relative to a starting static position of the camshaft prior to a brake application. The ECM determines an angle of rotation of the camshaft, determines the stroke length required for such an angle of rotation, and compares the stroke length to a predetermined stroke length. If the stroke length is greater than or equal to the predetermined stroke length, the ECM transmits an appropriate signal.
