The braking system for use with an in-line roller skate comprises a mounting assembly having an upper plate and two opposite side plates extending downwardly from the upper plate and being connectable to the framework of the roller skate adjacent to the rear wheel thereof. A brake plate having a flat bottom surface is rotatably mounted between the two side plates and is rotatable around a central axis thereof between a first position where the flat portion of its bottom surface is in frictional engagement with the circumferential surface of the rear wheel, and a second position where the flat portion of its bottom surface is in spaced relationship with the circumferential surface of the rear wheel. A biasing means is provided for urging the brake plate towards the second position. The braking system further comprises a brake lever for actuating the brake plate through a brake cable. The brake lever is mounted on an upper portion of the boot. Preferably, the braking system further comprises a blocking means for removably blocking and adjusting a portion of the brake cable between the brake lever and the brake plate, thereby allowing an actuation of the brake plate simply by flexing the knee forward. A braking system according to the present invention allows easy and efficient braking and allows to reduce the abrasion of the wheels.
