The present invention is concerned with a break-away sliding door system adapted to open or close an opening in a structure, the system comprising at least one impact resistant door panel pivotally assembled to an overhead trolley and rail assembly for longitudinal displacement and rotation about the rail axis, a pivoting longitudinal panel guide mounted to a surface of the structure extending from a side of the opening, and a guide follower mounted to the at least one door panel and in operable engagement with the panel guide, whereby the guide follower can be disengaged from the panel guide allowing the door panel to swing away from the surface by applying a force of at least a predetermined value to the panel, which in turn generates a force between the follower and the guide, which is sufficient to cause the guide to pivot and release the follower. The invention is further concerned with a guide mechanism for a break-away sliding door system.
