ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Compounds containing an .alpha.-carbonyl enediol functional group, such as ascorbic acid, or an aromatic enediol functional group, such as catechol, are employed as breakers in aqueous fluids containing natural, modi- fied, and synthetic gums as viscosity builders, e.g., in fluids such as are commonly used in treating wells.
