A breast pump assembly is formed in part by a breast receptacle housing having a breast-receiving first end portion configured to simulate the sucking action of a nursing baby's mouth. The breast-receiving portion integrally connects to a central portion of cylindrical cross-section, which in turn integrally connects to a milk-collection second end portion. The first end portion has a conical angle of approximately 75°, and the central portion is arcuately configured such that in use the second end portion extends generally downward when the first end portion is positioned on the breast. The second end portion is adapted to receive a milk-collection container. A flexible insert formed from a material such as latex is positionable in the breast receptacle housing so as to snugly fit within the first end portion and an abutting part of the central portion. Two diametrically- opposite regions of the flexible insert in the central portion adjacent the first end portion are formed to have a reduced thickness and configured to be cyclically inflatable to simulate the sucking action of a nursing baby's mouth. An air suction means creates reduced pressure inside the breast receptacle housing during use of the pump assembly so as to assist with drawing the nipple forward and drawing milk into the milk-collection container.
