This invention provides breathable composite materials with good liquid barrier properties comprising a laminate of a nonwoven web layer and a breathable film layer wherein breathability of the composite is provided by a plurality of point-like deformations of the film layer. In one embodiment, the composites also have a soft, cloth-like texture at at least one surface thereof. Also provided is a process for making such composites comprising applying a molten film-forming resin composition capable of developing breathability on deformation to a nonwoven web, cooling the molten composition to form a coated web having a web layer bonded to a film layer, and subjecting the coated web to heat and pressure at a plurality of points on a surface thereof wherein the heat, pressure and density of, and proportion of the composite surface occupied by, the deformations are effective to impart breathability to the film without loss of liquid barrier properties. In another embodiment of the process, web and cast film components are subjected to heat and pressure at a plurality of points to bond the film and the web and provide a plurality of point-like deformations of the film layer, thereby imparting breathability without loss of liquid barrier properties.

L'invention concerne des matières composites imper-respirantes possédant des bonnes propriétés barrières aux liquides et comprenant un stratifié d'une couche non tissée et d'une couche mince imper-respirante, cette caractéristiques imper-respirante du composite étant constituée par plusieurs déformations, du type point, sur la couche mince. Dans un mode de réalisation, ces composites présentent également une texture douce, du type étoffe, au niveau d'au moins une de leurs surfaces. L'invention concerne encore un procédé de préparation de tels composites, consistant à appliquer à l'état fondu une composition de résine formatrice de couche mince et susceptible de développer la caractéristiques imper-respirante lors de sa déformation sur une nappe non tissée, à refroidir la composition fondue, afin de former une nappe revêtue dont une couche est fixée sur une couche mince, et à soumettre cette nappe revêtue à de la chaleur et de la pression au niveau de plusieurs points de sa surface, de manière que la chaleur, la pression et la densité des déformations, et une partie de la surface composite occupée par ces déformations, dotent efficacement la couche mince d'une caractéristique imper-respirante, sans que cette couche mince perde ses propriétés barrières aux liquides. Dans un autre mode de réalisation du procédé, on soumet des composants présentant une nappe et une couche mince coulée, à de la chaleur et de la pression au niveau de plusieurs points, afin de fixer la couche mince sur la nappe et former plusieurs déformations du type point sur la couche mince, dotant celle-ci d'une caractéristique imper-respirante sans lui faire perdre ses propriétés barrières aux liquides.
