A breathable polyurethane having an upright moisture vapor transmission rate (MVTR) of more than about 500 gms/m2/24 hr comprises: a) poly(alkylene oxide) side-chain units in an amount comprising about 12 wt.% to about 80 wt.% of said polyurethane, wherein (i) alkylene oxide groups in said poly(alkylene oxide) side units have from 2 to 10 carbon atoms and are unsubstituted, substituted, or both unsubstituted and substituted, (ii) at least about 50 wt.% of said alkylene oxide groups are ethylene oxide, and (iii) said amount of said side-chain units is (i) at least about 30 wt.% when the molecular weight of said side-chain units is less than about 600 grams/mole, (ii) at least about 15 wt.% when the molecular weight of said side-chain units is from about 600 to 1,000 grams/mole, and at least about 12 wt.% when the molecular weight of said side-chain units is more than about 1,000 grams/mole, and b) poly(ethylene oxide) main-chain units in an amount comprising less than about 25 wt% of said polyurethane. Coatings and films for textiles and other articles and applications using such polyurethanes have excellent breathability, i.e., high moisture vapor transmission rates (MVTR).
L'invention concerne un polyuréthanne imper-respirant possédant un taux de transmission d'air humide (MVTR), en position verticale, supérieur à 500 grammes/m2/24 h environ, comprenant: a) des unités à chaîne latérale poly(alkylène oxyde) dans une quantité comprise entre 12 % en poids environ et 80 % en poids environ du polyuréthanne, dans lequel (i) les groupes alkylène oxyde des unités latérales poly(alkylène oxyde) possèdent de 2 à 10 atomes de carbone et sont non substitués, substitués, ou à la fois non substitués ou substitués, (ii) au moins environ 50 % en poids des groupes alkylène oxyde sont des oxyde d'éthylène, et (iii) la quantité de ces unités de chaînes latérales est (i) au moins de 30 % en poids environ lorsque le poids moléculaire des unités à chaîne latérale est inférieur à environ 600 grammes/mole, (ii) au moins de 15 % en poids environ lorsque le poids moléculaire des unités à chaîne latérale est compris entre environ 600 et 1000 grammes/mole, et au moins de 12 % en poids lorsque le poids moléculaire des unités à chaîne latérale est supérieur à environ 1000 grammes/mole, et b) des unités de chaîne principale en poly(éthylène oxyde) dans une quantité inférieure à 25 % en poids environ du polyuréthanne. Des revêtements ou des films pour des textiles ou d'autres articles, ainsi que des applications utilisant de tels polyuréthannes sont de très bons imper-respirants, c'est à dire qu'ils possèdent des taux élevés de transmission d'air humide (MVTR).
