BREATHING MASK CONSTRUCTION ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A breathing mask fox use with a respirator for supplying breathing air to the wearer comprises an outer mask body which has a sealing frame which is engageable around the periphery of the wearer's face and defines a full mask engaged peripherally with the frame. An inner mask is defined within the outer mask and has a peripheral sealing flange engageable with the wearer's face around the nose and mouth. It has a connection piece extending through the full mask. A space is defined between the inner mask and the outer mask which is capable of remaining under positive pressure and is at least partially sealed against the ambience by the sealing frame. The seal of the inner mask also seals the surface in respect to the wearer's nose and mouth. A check valve is provided permitting flow from the inner mask to the outer mask upon the pressure in the inner mask exceeding a predetermined amount. The method of insuring the secure seal of a person's respiratory system against ambience when wearing a respiratory mask having an inner mask portion connected to a respirator and having a breathing gas supply and an outer mask arranged over the inner mask comprises sealing the outer mask to the wearer's face so that only a minimum amount of leakage of air from the space between the mask leaks to the atmosphere, sealing the inner mask to the person's face within the outer mask and around the nose and mouth of the person and, during respiration from the respirator discharging a portion of the breathing air into the space between the inner and outer masks.
