Case 2866 BRIDGE TILT DETECTION SYSTEM ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The operation of CANDUTM-type nuclear reactors is effected by daily refuelling, using a massive refuelling machine suspended from a transverse bridge carried by a pair of spaced towers. Tilting of the bridge is avoided by assuring synchronized up and down displacement of the four corners of the bridge. Synchronization of the drive mechanisms is normally achieved by mechanical linkage of the four driven nuts, through gears and synchronizing shafts. However, shaft failures can occur, permitting de-synchronization of the drives. Monitoring means are provided for detecting the occurrence of such de-synchronization, to which the present disclosure is directed. A rotatable toothed member rigidly attached to each of the bridge elevating mechanisms is provided with passive proximity sensor means for monitoring the operation of the respective drive. The relative vertical displacement of each of the four corners of the bridge may thus be continuously monitored, and maintained within desired limits of synchronicity, using a comparator means having an output responsive to differences in displacement of respective ones of the toothed members connected in controlling relation with the bridge drive motors.
