ABSTRACT A brine system for use in electrolyzing salt to chlorine, caustic soda and hydrogen in chlor-alkali cells employing an ion exchange membrane and, more particularly, for the efficient use of brine as a raw material to be electrolyzed in chlor-alkali membrane cells; a diaphragm cell and evaporator plant is converted to one empolying membrane type cells while still utilizing the existing brine treat- ment and caustic evaporation equipment and the resultant plant installations; the brine is subjected to a brine purification pretreatment to remove impurities sufficient to make a satisfactory brine feed for electrolysis in chlor- alkali membrane cells; the purified brine is concentrated to a slurry containing up to about 30% NaCl solids, and depleted salt solution from an anode compartment of the membrane cells is combined with the slurry to produce the cell brine feed.
