A broadband communications system hav- ing means for coupling telephony (10) or other digital networks to a CTV network (12). The sys- tem includes transmitting a multiplex of telephony signals in 3 MHz channels in the forward band of the CTV network. Each 3 MHz channel is QPR modulated on a carrier and contains multiple sub- scriber telephony signals. The forward telephony channels are demodulated and demultiplexed by a plurality of subscriber terminals into the indi- vidual telephony signals directed to an addressed subscriber. The individually addressed telephony signal is then applied to a line card which con- nects the subscriber telephony equipment to the system. Audio and control signals returning from the subscriber are digitized into standard tele- phony signals and modulated on a carrier in 50 kHz reserved telephony channels onto the reverse band of the CTV network. The multiplicity of reverse band telephony channels are demodulated and multiplexed into a standard telephony signal which can be directly interfaced to the telephony network.

L'invention se rapporte à un système de communication à large bande possédant un dispositif de couplage d'un réseau téléphonique (10) et d'autres réseaux numériques à un réseau de télévision par câble (12). Le système consiste à transmettre en multiplex des signaux téléphoniques dans des canaux de 3 MHz de la bande avant du réseau de télévision par câble. Chaque canal de 3MHz est modulé en quadrature avec réponse partielle sur une porteuse et renferme plusieurs signaux téléphoniques d'abonnés. Les canaux téléphoniques d'aller sont démodulés et démultiplexés par une pluralité de terminaux d'abonnés dans les signaux téléphoniques individuels envoyés à un abonné désigné. Le signal téléphonique adressé individuellement est ensuite appliqué à une carte de ligne qui raccorde l'équipement téléphonique de l'abonné au système. Des signaux audio et de commande en retour de l'abonné sont numérisés en signaux téléphoniques standards et modulés sur une porteuse dans des canaux téléphoniques réservés de 50 kHz sur la bande inverse du réseau de télévision par câble. L'ensemble de canaux téléphoniques à bande inverse est démodulé et multiplexé en un signal téléphonique standard qui peut être directement appliqué au réseau téléphonique.
