A pulse-reshaping optical fiber having a core with refractive index nc surrounded by a cladding layer, the diameter of the core changing monotonically along the length of the fiber. The core includes a central region having a maximum refractive index n1 and a moat region disposed radially adjacent to the central region. The moat region has a minimum refractive index n2 which is sufficiently low that the index delta .DELTA.2 of the moat region with respect to nc is not greater than 0.1 %. The moat region affects the change in dispersion with respect to fiber cladding diameter, as well as providing the pulse-reshaping fiber with low dispersion versus wavelength slope. The pulse-reshaping fiber is particularly useful in association with optical transmission systems where high transmission rates and narrow pulse widths are desired, including components such as high pulse rate wavelentgh-division-multiplexers (WDMs) and optical regenerators.
L'invention concerne une fibre optique à reformage d'impulsions comportant une âme à indice de réfraction n¿c? entourée d'une couche de type gaine, le diamètre de l'âme changeant de façon monotone sur la longueur de la fibre. L'âme comprend une zone centrale ayant un indice de réfraction maximum n¿1? et une zone douve disposée de façon radialement adjacente à la zone centrale. La région douve présente un indice de réfraction minimum n¿2? suffisamment bas pour que l'écart .DELTA.¿2? entre l'indice de la zone douve et l'indice n¿c? ne dépasse pas 0,1 %. La zone douve affecte le changement de dispersion par rapport au diamètre de la gaine de la fibre, et confère à la fibre à reformage d'impulsions une courbe dispersion/longueur d'onde à faible rapport d'impulsion. La fibre à reformage d'impulsions est particulièrement utile en association avec des systèmes de transmission optique pour lesquels on souhaite obtenir de grandes vitesses de transmission et des largeurs d'impulsion étroites, notamment les composants tels que les multiplexeurs par répartition en longueur d'ondes et les régénérateurs optiques à haute vitesse d'impulsion.
