2078446 9115845 PCTABS00007 A broadcast digital sound processing system (1) includes an ISA (Industry Standard Architecture) bus compatible personal computer (2) with a hard disk drive (3) and a sound processor board (4) installed in an expansion slot of the computer (2). The board (4) includes a stereo input, analog to digital converter (ADC) (6) and a stereo set of digital to analog converters (DAC's) (7 and 8) interfaced to a digital signal processor (DSP) chip (5). A stereophonic audio signal is converted to digital data by the ADC (6) and communicated to the computer (2) by the DSP chip (5) through a two port record first-in/first-out (FIFO) buffer (9) for storage on the disk (3). A program is played back by communicating a program data file (75) through a two port playback FIFO buffer (10) to the DSP (5) and from there to the DAC's (7 and 8) for reconstruction to a stereo set of analog signals. The reconstructed audio signals may then be used as a modulating signal for radio broadcasting. The system (1) includes a method (100) for digitally time companding groups of program elements to enable playback of the program elements within a selected performance window.
