ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Novel flame retardants, novel flame retardant poly- styrene and novel flame retardant polyolefins and a process for the preparation thereof are disclosed. The polystyrene is ren- dered flame retardant by a composition having the formula: Image wherein q=1 or 2 and (1) when q=1 then r=0 1, or 2 and n=3, 4 or 5, provided that r+n is equal to or less than 5 and A is an alkyl group having from 1 to 9 carbon atoms: (2) when q=2, then n=2, 3 or 4 and r=0 or 1, and when r=0 two phenyl groups of separate structural unity are directly linked in a para position, and when r=1 then said phenyl groups are linked in a para posi- tion by way of an oxygen atom, an SO-2 group or an isopropylidene group, represented by A, and in all instances X represents -NO2, -Cl, -Br, -CO-CH3, -CN, -OR2 or a -COOR2 group and R1 and R2 may be the same or different and represent a substituted or unsub- stituted alkyl group with from one to twelve carbon atoms, and p and m are 0 or an integer from 1 to 3, provided that m+p is equal to or less than 5.
