A wood chipper (10) has a pair of feed rollers (26, 36), a first of which (26) has a fixed axis position, and a second of which (36) is moveably toward and away from the first feed roller (26). Springs (74) are provided to urge the moveable roller (36) toward the first feed roller and to a reference position, and an actuator (62) is provided for moving the moveable feed roller (36) away from the first feed roller (26). A sensor (90) is provided to sense the height of an object (88) on a feed chute (22) as the object approach the feed rollers (26, 36) and cause the actuator (62) to move the moveable feed roller (36) away from the reference when the sensor (90) signals the object (88) exceeds a selected amount.
