In the case of a brushless synchronous machine, for example a synchronous generator, having an exciter (2), whose field excitation winding (9) is powered via a regulator (11) connected to a separate auxiliary winding (A, B, C, D, E) in the stator of the main machine (1), in accordance with the invention, the auxiliary winding (A, B, C, D, E) has a number of phases that differs from the harmonic number of the harmonic wave that is the most salient in the event of a short circuit. In the case of a heavily salient third harmonic wave, the auxiliary winding has a four- or five-phase design.
