ABSTRACT A buckle for a vehicle seat belt system has a tongue with a latch formation receivable in a socket provided by a channel member. A releasable latch assembly has side portions by which it is slidably guided in gaps in the side walls of the channel member between a latching position and a release position. In the former, a latch portion, carried on a part of the assembly extending between the side portions beneath the floor of the channel, extends through an aperture in the floor for latching engagement with the latch formation of the tongue. A release portion of the latch assembly bridges across between the side portions and can be depressed to move the assembly against a spring bias to the release position. The release portion can be actuated directly, or by engagement by slidably or pivotably mounted release elements. A spring biassed ejector can be provided and so can a micro switch responsive to the presence or absence of the tongue in the socket.
