ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A buffer composition for use in the electrophoretic separation of proteins into fractions, the buffer composition consisting essentially of Tris; an acid having the formula R1-CO-NH-R2-COOH where R1 is NH2 or an alkyl or aryl group, preferably NH2, C6H5 or C6H4NH2 and where R2 is an alkyl group preferably CH2, CH2-CH2 or CH(CH3); and a water soluble salt of the acid; the acid and salt being present in amounts and in a ratio to maintain the pH of an aqueous solution of the composition at from 8.2 to 9Ø The preferred acid is hippuric acid.
