ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Centre buffer couplings are articulated on vehicle frames to permit the easy negotiation of curves and switches. To allow this the coupling head extends beyond the vehicle buffers and is connected to a coupling rod. The hazard to other vehicles travelling over the same rails caused by the protruding coupling head is eliminated by providing the coupling rod with a joint permitting horizontal swivelling of the head. A sleeve, cooperating with a cam, allows the joint to be made rigid or free, dependent upon the position of the sleeve and the setting of the cam.
