Abstract A pharmaceutical composition including a proton acceptor and an amino acid buffer is disclosed. The amino acid buffers the proton acceptor by lowering the pH while maintaining the proton accepting ability of the proton acceptor. The pharmaceutical composition of the present invention is suitable for treatment of acid-base homeostasis disorders in mammals and in particular to treatment of acidosis in humans.
