ABSTRACT A building block which is to be used in erecting a masonry structure has two exposed surfaces and four resting surfaces which extend between the exposed surfaces and face the resting surfaces of neighboring building blocks. Two of the resting surfaces which meet at a common corner are provided with grooves, and the remaining two resting surfaces are provided with splines or ribs which are received in the grooves respec- tively of the building blocks of an adjacent row of building blocks, or of neighboring building blocks of the same row. Mortar or similar bonding agent is accommodated in the grooves during the erection of the masonry structure and bonds the neighboring building blocks to one another. Reinforcing ele- ments, such as fron rods, maybe embedded in the mortar or simi- lar bonding agent received in the grooves, and the building blocks may have substantially centrally located through holes which receive the reinforcing elements which extend beyond the spaces between the adjacent building blocks of one row in a masonry structure wherein the building blocks of one row are shifted relative to the building blocks of another row.
