ABSTRACT A building element or panel, comprising an insulating core plate, preferably made of cellular polystyrene or the like material, and two thin steel surface sheets on the side surfaces of the said insulating plate. An additional sheet is arranged between at least one sheet and the insulating plate, the said additional sheet being made of either wooden particle board or gypsum board or the like material having corresponding properties. The additional sheet is arranged to maintain the weight carrying capacity of the element for a certain time when the element is exposed to external heat and to prevent the formation of the gaseous phase of the core material by insulating the core Prom external heat and by taking latent heat from external heat. In the case of particle board this is based on partial carbonization of the particle board and in the case of gypsum board this is based on the vapourization of the water of crystallization.
