A guard rail scaffold assembly for mounting on or around a surface of a building or like structure, comprises a guard rail assembly member. A plurality of fastening pads are fastened to the selected surface, either by screws, or by an adhesive, or both, each pad having a pivot part thereon. A guard rail assembly member is attached to each pad by a pivot pin, each assembly member comprising a base member carrying the other pivot part. The base member also carries surface engaging members on opposite sides of the pivot which engage the structure surface. A first post member extends at a right angle from the base member and, when the scaffold is to be mounted on a horizontal surface, this constitutes a guard rail support member or has a guard rail support member mounted thereon, this support member carrying retainer members which receive the horizontal guard rails. When the scaffold is to be mounted on a vertical surface each assembly member also comprises a second post member releasibly mountable on the first post member, and extending at a right angle thereto, this second post member receiving the guard rail support member instead of the first post member. In the latter case an adjustable length retainer member extends between the base member and the second post member parallel to the first post member. The assembly can thus be fastened either to a horizontal surface of the building, or to a vertical surface, or both, as dictated by which is possible, or at the discretion of the installer.
