Abstract Detergent compositions comprising an organic synthetic detergent and N-polyalkyleneglycol-N,N-diacetic acid as a non- phosphorous detergency builder. They avoid the environmental problems of detergent phosphates. The novel detergency builder has the formula Image wherein each R is selected from the group consisting of ethylene and propylene; n is a number from 2 to about 8; and each M is either hydrogen or a salt-forming cation.
