A bullet trap backstop is provided for use in a firing range or other situation wherein flying particles are present. The bullet trap makes use of a plurality of building block members. Each building block member is formed of a cured mixture of shredded vehicle tire parts and a natural latex solution. The building blocks are stacked together and include projectile recovery channels which extend therethrough so as to allow the projectiles which lodge in the bullet trap to be recovered. The bullet trap can be formed of single or multiple walls and can include a velocityreduction layer which adheres to a wall and initially receives the projectiles to reduce their velocity.
