ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A gas burner assembly for producing a high intensity flame while also producing a flame of a large area. The burner assembly includes a hollow shell having a stem member engaged at one end thereof for supplying a combustible gaseous mixture to the shell. A circular, disk-shaped slug member which contains a plurality of cavities extending therethrough directs the flow of the gaseous mixture through the cavities. The longitudinal axes of the plurality of cavities extending through the slug member extend at angles relative to the the longitudinal axis of the shell. Part of the combustible gaseous mixture is caused to emerge from each cavity and strike and be reflected from the interior walls of the shell, causing the velocity of the gas to decrease. The reflected gaseous mixture is recombined at a lower velocity with gas stream parts which do not impinge on the shell.
