ABSTRACT A method of controlling a fuel burner with a mixture of fuel and air or oxidant gas is disclosed wherein the ratio of air or oxidant gas to fuel supplied to the burner is such that there is minimal excess air or oxidant gas, thereby restricting the emission of SO3, and wherein inert gas is fed separately to the hottest part of the flame, thereby hindering the emission of NOx. A burner for carrying out this method is also disclosed and comprises an outer peripheral tube or a plurality of pokers for feeding inert gas separately to the burner and directing the inert gas to that part of the flame where NOx is formed.
