ABSTRACT The invention is directed to a cathode busbar structure for an electrolytic cell. The cathode busbar structure comprises at least one lead-in busbar and a plurality of busbar strips. The busbar strips have different relative dimensions. The lead-in busbar or busbars and the plurality of busbar strips arc positioned in such a configuration wherein the leadOin busbar or busbars and the plurality of busbar strips are adapted to carry an electric current and to maintain a substantially uniform current density through the cathode busbar structure to electrical contact points adjacent to the cathode fingers without any significant voltage drop across the cathode busbar structure and with the most econo?cal power con sumption in the cathode busbar structure. This is accom- plished by an arrangement of the busbar strips in contact with the sidewall of the cathode compartment of the cell so that the electrical contact are is greater along the por- tion of the sidewall of the cathode compartment that is nearest to the end of the lead-in busbar adapted for electrical connection.
