The invention relates to a process for butt welding at least two plates (1, 2) of different thicknesses using a laser beam (3). The process consists in bringing the plates (1, 2) into contact at their lateral surfaces (4, 5) to be joined, aiming the laser beam (3) at the thicker plate (1) so that the vertical axis X-X through the focal point P of the laser beam (3) on the said plate (1) is at a set distance from the plane of the joint (7) between the two plates and in making the weld on the lateral surfaces (4, 5) joined by local fusion of the said plates by the laser beam (3).

L'invention a pour objet un procédé de soudage bord à bord d'au moins deux tôles (1, 2) de différentes épaisseurs, au moyen d'un faisceau laser (3). Le procédé consiste à amener les tôles (1, 2) en contact au niveau de leurs faces latérales (4, 5) à rabouter, diriger le faisceau laser (3) en direction de la tôle (1) la plus épaisse pour que l'axe vertical X-X passant par le point focal P du faisceau laser (3) sur ladite tôle (1), soit à une distance déterminée du plan de joint (7) des tôles et à réaliser un joint soudé au niveau des faces latérales (4, 5) raboutées par fusion locale desdites tôles au moyen d'un faisceau laser (3).
