ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The butterfly valve has a thermoplastic valve body molded around a subassembly including a rotatable stem and a pair of opposed disc halves secured to the stem for rotation with the stem. The valve body includes a central flow passage and the disc and stem are rotatably mounted in the flow passage for movement between an open position and a closed position to shut off flow through the flow passage. The butterfly valve is fabricated by first positioning the disc halves on opposite sides of the stem in opposed face-to-face relationship and securing the disc halves to the stem. The resulting subassembly is then positioned in a mold having a cavity arranged to define the valve body and a pair of cores which clampingly engage the disc and define the flow passage. A molten thermoplastic material is then injected into the mold cavity to form the valve body in a finished form.
