An oil filter (10) utilizes a thermoplastic material (22) having oil oxidation and acidification ar- resting additives mounted in a cas- ing (11) between particulate filter- ing material (19) and a felt pad (21). The thermoplastic mate- rial is desirably high molecular weight polypropylene in the form of rice-shaped pellets, or spaghetti- shaped strands. The additives in- clude about 10-17 weight % of the thermoplastic material/additive combination, and as the thermo- plastic material is dissolved by the above ambient temperature oil, the additives are released. The thermoplastic material pellets or strands are formed by mixing anti- oxidation and anti-acidification ad- ditives with liquid thermoplastic material to form a mixture, ex- truding the mixture into spaghetti- like strands having a thickness of about .0625-.125 inches, cooling the strands, cutting the strands into discrete elements, and then plac- ing the discrete elements into an oil filter held in place to contact oil to gradually dissolve to release the additives.

Un filtre à huile (10) utilise un matériau thermoplastique (22) contenant des additifs pour inhiber l'oxydation et l'acidification. Ces additifs sont disposés dans un carter (11) entre le matériau filtrant particulaire (19) et une couche de feutre (21). Le matériau thermoplastique est d'une manière avantageuse constitué d'un polypropylène à haut poids moléculaire et il se présente comme des pastilles en forme de grains de riz ou de filaments ressemblant à des spaghettis. Les additifs constituent environ 10-17 % en poids de la combinaison matériau thermoplastique/additifs. Comme le matériau thermoplastique se dissout dans l'huile, lorsque la température de celle-ci est au-dessus de la température ambiante, cela provoque une libération des additifs. Pour former les pastilles ou les filaments de matériau thermoplastique, on mélange des additifs antioxydants et antiacides avec le matériau thermoplastique liquide pour constituer une préparation homogène, on extrude le mélange sous la forme de filaments ressemblant à des spaghettis ayant une épaisseur de 0,0625-0,125 pouces environ, on refroidit les filaments extrudés, on les coupe en longueurs définies et on les place dans un filtre à huile pour les mettre en contact avec l'huile qui dissout et libère progressivement les additifs.
