This invention relates to compounds of the formula (see fig. I ) and to pharmaceutically acceptable salts thereof. The compounds of formula 1 arepotent antibacterial and antibacterial agents that may be used to treat various bacterial and protozoal infections and disorders related to such infections. The invention also relates to pharmaceutical compositions containing the compounds of formula 1 and to methods of treating bacterial and protozoal infections by administering the compounds of formula 1. In the formula, X is -CH(-NR18R A)-, -CO-, CH2NR9-, -NR9CH2 or -C(=NR5)-; R1 and R2 are each OH or R1 and R2 taken together represent -X2-CO-O-, or R1 is oxo, OH or NR9R10 and R2 and X1 taken together represent -O- etc.; R3 is OH or OCH3; R4 is -(CH2)n NR8R15; R20 is H or -COR9; R18 and R19 are each H, alkyl or the like; R9 is H or alkyl; R5 is OH, alkyl, alkoxy or the like; and X2 is -O-, -NR9- or -N(NR9R10)-.

L'invention concerne des composés de la formule (voir fig. I) et des sels utilisables en pharmacie correspondants. Les composés de formule 1 sont des agents antibactériens et antiprotozoaires efficaces qui peuvent être utilisés pour traiter diverses infections causées par des bactéries et des protozoaires, ainsi que des troubles attribuables à ces infections. L'invention a aussi trait à des compositions pharmaceutiques contenant les composés de la formule 1, de même qu'à des méthodes de traitement des infections causées par des bactéries et des protozoaires par administration des composés de formule 1. Dans la formule, X représente-CH(-NR18R A)-, -CO-, CH2NR9-, -NR9CH2 ou -C(=NR5)-; R1 et R2 représentent chacun un groupement OH, ou bien représentent ensemble -X2-CO-O-. ou R1 est un oxo, un groupement OH ou NR9R10, et R2 et X1 représentent ensemble -O-, etc.; R3 est un groupement OH ou OCH3; R4 est un groupement -(CH2)n NR8R15; R20 est un atome d'hydrogène ou un groupement -COR9; R18 et R19 sont chacun un atome d'hydrogène, un groupement alkyle ou un groupement semblable; R9 est un atome d'hydrogène ou un groupement alkyle; R5 représente OH, un alkyle, un alcoxy ou un groupement semblable; et X2 représente -O-, -NR9- ou -N(NR9R10)-.
