ABSTRACT A stopping device, such as a cable and chain stopper on a vessel or the like, fitted with a fork-shaped stopping member having a lead portion, and which is connected to means for lifting the stopping member to above and lowering the same to below a specific level, in the present case a deck. The fork-shaped member is provided with a movable slotted rotary disc adapted to be locked in a plurality of positions, and which is arranged in a cavity of the stopping member, downwardly of the lead portion.
