ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A drive apparatus for a cable conveyor system is provided herein having a housing and a drive wheel means rotatably attached to the housing. A continuous cable having a plurality of spaced members rigidly attached thereto is provided, a portion of such cable being disposed around one side of the drive wheel means, such one side of the drive wheel means being defined as the portion of the drive means having the cable in contact there- with at all times herein, the drive wheel means engaging the cable for pulling the cable through the cable conveyor system. Channel means are attached to the housing for receiving and guiding a partial loop of excess cable and for allowing movement of that partial loop due to a change in size of the partial loop from a point in which an intermediate part of the partial loop is in contact with the other side of the drive wheel means to a point in which the intermediate part is spaced a substantial distance from the drive wheel means. In this way, the channel means comprises the sole support for the partial loop, the partial loop of excess cable extends from the point at which the cable departs contact with the drive wheel means to a point at which the cable departs the channel means. The cable conveyor so provided is more economical to manufacture and is more trouble-free in its performance than prior art devices, and is shut down if the cable becomes too long or is broken.
