ABSTRACT A cable descent device comprises a housing which may be closed around a vertically extending cable. In the closed position, a pair of complementary brake shoes are urged against the cable. Two outwardly extending arm assemblies each include a suspension lever on which the operator maybe suspended to cause the inner end of the lever to bear against its associated brake shoe to provide a braking bias on the cable. Each arm assembly includes a manual control member connected to the suspension lever whereby downward movement of the control member counteracts the weight of the operator to move the suspension lever up thereby releasing the brake shoe. In a preferred embodiment, a spring urges the suspension lever downward to provide braking bias when no operator is suspended, and the manual control members extends generally inwardly and upwardly to enable operation by foot from above.
